Winifred T. (Ryan) McCarthy, 94, of North Attleboro, MA and formerly of South Yarmouth and Norwood, MA, passed away peacefully at her residence at The Branches of North Attleboro.
She passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, after a period of declining health.
Winnie was the loving wife of the late Robert (Bob) A. McCarthy, Sr. whom she married on April 14, 1951. Bob passed away on January 20, 2017.
Born in Somerville, MA on October 6, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Michael Ryan and the late Delia (Conway) Ryan, both immigrants from Ireland. She was raised and educated in her native Somerville and was a graduate of St. Clements High School and attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School.
Winnie was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as the Southeast Division Manager of the Department of Unemployment Assistance for more than 20 years prior to her retirement.
A resident of The Branches of North Attleboro since September 2018, she previously resided in South Yarmouth, MA for 20 years during her retirement. Prior to the Cape, she had lived for many years in Norwood and Walpole.
While living on the Cape, Winnie was a communicant of Saint Pius X Parish where she was a member of the Catholic Women's Club.
To call Winnie a social person would be a serious understatement. She loved people. She made friends easily and always enjoyed meeting new people. And she made friends everywhere she went.
As a couple, Winnie and Bob frequently hosted parties at their home - often just neighborhood drop-ins - but always a good time. They also loved to dance. At every opportunity, Winnie and Bob were usually the first people on the dance floor.
Winnie was also an avid card player - preferably bridge but she could also handle her own in a good game of poker.
Prior to her retirement, she and her family spent more than 30 years at their cottage in Dennisport on Cape Cod. It was a small cottage, but everyone was invited. And sure enough, everyone showed up, sleeping bags and all.
Winnie was the cherished mother of four children: Robert A. McCarthy, Jr. and his wife, Sheryl King, of Milford, MA; Susan M. Fulton and her husband, Robert Fulton, of Bow, New Hampshire; John M. McCarthy and his companion, Jane Murphy, of Wilmington, North Carolina and Maryclaire McCarthy of Attleboro, MA. In addition, she leaves 10 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was the grandmother of the late infant, Elizabeth McCarthy, and was the sister of the late John Ryan, James Ryan, Francis Ryan, and Mary Donahue.
