William Garfield Hjerpe

April 24, 1924 — August 9, 2020

William Garfield Hjerpe, 96, of North Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at his daughter's South Washington Street home where he had been living for 7 years.  He was the beloved husband of Mary Lou (Mason) Hjerpe, with whom he shared 70 extraordinarily happy and fulfilling years of marriage.
Born on April 24, 1924 in Worcester, MA, he was the son of the late Garfield Hjerpe and the late Martha M. (Melander) Hjerpe.
Raised in Shrewsbury, MA, he attended Shrewsbury High School, where he earned acclaim as a nationally ranked oarsman and subsequently was accepted into the University of Pennsylvania's engineering program.  At PENN, he was a member of the crew team and a participant in NROTC.  Following his graduation and during World War II and the Korean War, he honorably served our country in the United States Navy.
After living with his family in Auburn, Massachusetts and Montreal, Quebec for many years, he and his family in 1968 became residents of North Attleboro, and for forty-five years resided in a lovely home on Grant Street. His energy was limitless.  As an avid athlete, he played tennis and hockey into his 80s.  He travelled the world, drove multiple times cross-country with his wife and family, and he loved captaining his boat on lakes and oceans, and down the St. Lawrence River.  As a loving dad and grandpa, his positive attitude and strong support, along with his playful vitality in his pool, on the beach, and in the backyard were priceless.
In addition to his wife, Mary Lou, he leaves his loving children: William M. Hjerpe and his wife, Donna, of Annandale, MN and Fort Myers, FL; Cynthia S. Hedberg and her husband, Herbert, of North Attleboro, MA; Dr. Wayne G. Hjerpe of Dennis, MA; and Eric F. Hjerpe and his wife, Karol, of Sudbury, MA. He was the proud grandfather of Elisabeth, Katherine, Bill, Mason, Mary Lou, Linnea, Lars, Ingrid and Dayna, and adoring great-grandfather of Isabelle, John, Abby, Grace, Eli, Anders, Greta and Elia.  William was the brother of the late Doris Anderson, and leaves his niece, Martha Connor, and his nephew, Bruce Anderson.
All services for William will be privately held.
