Wanda A. Bernier

Wanda A. (Ziebutski) Bernier, 93, of Madonna Manor, North Washington Street, North Attleboro; formerly of Christopher Heights, South Main Street, Attleboro and formerly of Bourne and North Attleboro; died peacefully on Saturday evening, January 5, 2013 at Madonna Manor where she had been a resident for the past two and a half years. She was the wife of the late Paul A. Bernier, R.Ph. who died on September 5, 2005. Born in New York, New York on July 26, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Gustav and Martha (Schwenk) Ziebutski, German immigrants. She was a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School in Wyoming, Delaware where she was a schoolmate of Robert Mitchum with the Class of 1937. She served as a Second Lieutenant Nurse in the Army Nurses Corps during World War II as she was responsible for caring for those injured soldiers of war at the Dover, Delaware Air Force Base. As a registered nurse, she later worked at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro for more than ten years as an emergency room and pediatric nurse. She and her late husband were the owners and operators of the former Bernier's Pharmacy on South Washington Street in North Attleboro from 1963 - 1981. Mrs. Bernier treasured the time spent in her vegetable garden at her former home on Arnold Road in North Attleboro and she proudly provided family and friends with the abundance of her harvest during the summer months and would can countless items for savoring during the winter months. Among her favorite pastimes were clamming on Cape Cod, spending time in the outdoors, visiting yard sales for that special treasure but most important to her was the time spent with her family creating lifelong memories to cherish. She leaves four children: Ronald P. Bernier of Newport, Rhode Island; Robert M. Bernier of Plainville; Elaine A. Petrasky of Seekonk and Michael A. Bernier of Jackson, New Hampshire; ten grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a sister: Freida Pinkavitch of Dover, Delaware; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. She was the sister of the late Emil Butz, Ed Ziebutski, Helen Wagner, Martha Kamerlon and Ina Winter. Public visitation has been respectfully omitted. A private funeral service with Veteran's Honors will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Private burial with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. Bernier's name may be made to the Resident Activity Fund of the Madonna Manor Nursing Home, 85 North Washington Street, North Attleboro, MA 02760.
