Velma K. (Mcadams) Cook

February 14, 1927 — January 14, 2022

Velma K. Cook, 94, of Wiscasset, ME, formally of Naples, FL, and Attleboro, MA, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022, at her daughter's home in Wiscasset, ME, surrounded by her family.  She was the beloved wife of the late Earle F. Cook Jr. and the daughter of the late Charles T. McAdams and the late Velma I. Young.
Velma graduated from Brookline High School and then attended the Chandler School for Women in Boston. She worked for several years as a legal secretary in Boston. On September 18, 1954, she married Earle F Cook Jr. and soon the couple settled in Belmont, MA, where they welcomed three children: Brian, Cynthia and Jeffrey. Earle and Velma purchased what became the Cook Funeral Home in 1965 and the family then settled in Attleboro, MA. In addition to many other things, Velma was the bookkeeper for the Cook Funeral Home for more than thirty years.
Velma was a warm, gracious, and caring woman who was extremely involved in the community. She headed committees, organized fund drives, and volunteered her services at everything from statewide agencies to the local garden club.
She was a member of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC) and was, for 18 years, President of the Greater Attleboro/North Attleboro area board of directors. She headed three United Way panels, was treasurer of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and treasurer of the Greater Attleboro area Big Brother/Big Sisters. She sang in her church choir, volunteered at Sturdy Hospital, led fundraising events for the hospital, and found time to buy Christmas presents for local children in need. She also ran celebrity nights in Attleboro for several years, bringing the likes of Victor Borge and Barbara Mandrell to the community.
The list of her accomplishments as a volunteer is extensive.  She was recognized on November 17, 1989, as "Person of the Year" by the Attleboro Area Chamber of Commerce for all her contributions to the community.
Velma never ran out of energy to give to the community. She was the General Chairwoman of the Attleboro Tricentennial Committee. After years of planning, fund raising and coordinating, 1994 was filled with activities and functions culminating in fireworks, a time capsule burial and a grand parade celebrating the three hundredth anniversary of the city.
Once Earle and Velma settled in Naples, Florida, she continued to volunteer. She became quite involved at her church working tirelessly at the Bargain Box (charity resale shop), chaired the Christmas Bazaar and much more.
In addition to all the volunteer work, Velma's greatest love was her family and friends. She was the most loving grandmother and great grandmother anyone could ask for. Velma's passion for life and living served as a true legacy to her family, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She leaves her loving children:  Brian R. Cook of Tucson, AZ; Cynthia C. Brown and her husband, Richard Davis, of Wiscasset, ME, and Westford, MA; and Jeffrey A. Cook and his wife, Bonnie Cook, of Attleboro, MA.  She was the adoring grandmother of Austin Cook of Tucson, AZ; Nicholas Brown of Canton, MA; Lindsay Brown of Cambridge, MA; Robert Cook of Gorham ME; and Jennifer Garcia of London, UK; and the proud great-grandmother of two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her beloved brother, Charles McAdams of Harwich MA. She leaves her extended family and many dear friends, both near and far.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Visitation for both Velma and Earle on Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 841 North Main Street, Attleboro, MA followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary.  Burial for Earle and Velma will follow with Military Honors in recognition of Earle's service to our country in North Purchase Cemetery, Attleboro.
