Ursula L. Dyer of Plainville, Massachusetts, passed away on June 9, 2026, after a short and unexpected illness.

Ursula was born on September 20, 1939, and grew up in Rockville, Connecticut, the eldest of three daughters born to James and Florence Lynch. She graduated from Rockville High School in 1957, around the time that she met and then married her husband, Ronald R. Dyer, who was stationed nearby with the United States Air Force. Ursula and Ron raised their four children in Tolland, Connecticut. Their marriage of 55 years was one of devotion, friendship, laughter and, above all, love.

Ursula's employment and volunteer activities over the years reflected her life-long interest in education, history and health care. She obtained her first library card as a young girl, and then worked at her local library throughout high school.

For a number of years she was the head librarian at the Hicks School in Tolland, and, when her husband's career prompted a move to Massachusetts in 1983, she served on the Building Committee that oversaw the construction of a new public library in Plainville.

In recent years, Ursula was a volunteer at the Plainville Senior Center and the James Humphrey House, Plainville's History Museum and Archives. Before her retirement in 2001, she was employed for many years at Dedham Medical Associates, first as a medical records transcriptionist and later as the administrative assistant to the Chief Operating Officer.

Ursula attended Rhode Island School of Nursing for one year after she graduated from high school, so her years at Dedham Medical Associates were an appropriate coda to her working life.

Ursula was blessed with a quiet eye, observing much and remembering much. Her recall, without Internet assistance, was unmatched and made her a formidable trivia player.

She loved history, especially about England and the Royal Family (pre-King Charles). She visited England a number of times - a country that she truly felt was a "precious stone set in the silver sea." Ursula loved nature and welcomed birds of all feathers to her wooded yard, especially the hummingbirds that heralded the arrival of spring.

She appreciated many different types of music, such as classical, folk, a cappella, and Broadway musicals ranging from West Side Story, which she saw at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City as a teenager, all the way to Hamilton.

Ursula was proudly left-handed with beautiful penmanship that would have been the envy of any medieval scribe. Her letters and thank you notes are now treasured gifts to all who received them. As a mother, Ursula was patient, gentle and kind. Her children appreciated her parenting philosophy that the fewer the rules, the better. ("Do your best, and everything else will take care of itself.") Most of all, Ursula loved God, her family and her friends.

Ursula is survived by three children, Alison (Robert) Smith of Alexandria, VA; Lori (Bill) Cooper of Inlet Beach, FL; Jim Dyer (Jen) of Norfolk, MA; daughter-in-law Gaye Dyer of Omaha, NE; six grandchildren, Ryan (Jessica) Cooper of Chicago, IL; James (Anna) Smith of Wilmington, NC; Rachel Cooper of Orlando, FL; Hannah (Nathaniel) Brown of Raleigh, NC; Maeve Dyer of Boston, MA; Michael Dyer of Boston, MA; seven great grandchildren, Caleb, Alexander, Andrew and Christopher Smith, and Douglas, Frances and Lawrence Brown; sister Maureen (Morris) Webber of Ellington, CT; nieces, Paula Webber of Ellington, CT, and Tricia Johnson of Tolland, CT; nephews, Dean Webber of Hampstead, NC, and Eric Johnson of Manchester, CT. Ursula is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald R. Dyer, and son Kevin P. Dyer; her parents, James and Florence Lynch; sister, Sharon Johnson, and brother-in-law, David Johnson.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, RI 02864. Interment will be held on June 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., Valley View Cemetery, Tolland, CT.
