Thomas J Snyder, Sr., 86, of Attleboro died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, September 26, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Shirley M. (Stevens) Snyder. Tom and Shirley were happily married for 66 years. He was born October 8, 1924, in Arnold, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Joseph Thomas Snyder and Margaret Cecilia (Held) Snyder. Tom and Shirley met in high school and married on June 29, 1945. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp, serving overseas, during the World War II era. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1950. Tom and Shirley moved to North Attleboro in 1950 and then to Attleboro in 1955. Tom was employed in Attleboro at former Metals and Controls Company and subsequently Texas Instruments for 34 years prior to his retirement in 1984. He served multiple management roles and was an Executive Vice President of the company at the time of his retirement. Tom cared deeply about supporting the community. He served on the Board of Directors at Sturdy Memorial Hospital and also the Board of Directors at the former Durfee Attleboro Savings Bank. He served on the leadership committee of the New England Manufacturers Association and was always active in supporting the United Way of Greater Attleboro. He was a longtime Attleboro Rotarian. He was a long time member of Highland Country Club. He and Shirley loved the ocean and spent many great years on Sanibel Island in Florida. In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter: Sheryl Diane Snyder, and her husband, Michael, of Washington, DC; four sons: Thomas Joseph Snyder Jr., and his wife, Saundra, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Gregory Lee Snyder and his wife, Bernadette, of San Clemente, California; Bruce Alan Snyder of San Diego, California and Gary John Snyder, and his wife, Kate, of Seekonk. He also leaves ten grandchildren: Derek Snyder and Shannon Maynard, Zachary and Zoe Snyder McGeary, Melissa and Tyler Snyder, Ashley and Austin Snyder, Hilary and Jeffrey Snyder and three great grandchildren: Asha and Shayna Snyder and Jaxson Maynard. He is also survived by a brother: Norman Snyder, MD of Riverside, California and a sister: Dorothy Blaney of Anaheim, California. Private visitation and funeral services with Veterans Honors will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2011 in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Burial with military honors will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery and Arboretum, North Attleboro.
