Shirley Mae (Snelgrove) Currie, 86, of Narragansett, RI, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at South County Hospital in Wakefield, RI. She was the wife of the late Donald L. Currie who died on October 28, 1962.She was born on July 7, 1931 in Hartford, CT, the only child of the late Edwin R. and Olive M. (Rogers) Snelgrove. Shirley's parents perished in July 1944 in the horrific Hartford Circus Fire, leaving Shirley badly burned. After a lengthy recovery period, she lived with relatives in Windsor, CT. A graduate of the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT, Class of 1949, she then attended Simmons College in Boston. In 1950, Shirley married Donald L. Currie and cherished her role as a Homemaker to her husband and their twin sons, Alan S. Currie and Paul M. Currie. After Donald's untimely death in 1962, Shirley raised her sons as a loving and devoted single mother. She was briefly married to Chester Ashley of Attleboro, MA, later in her life.A resident of Attleboro, MA for forty years, Shirley then lived in the Bonnet Shores section of Narragansett for twenty years. She was a longtime active member of the Second Congregational Church in Attleboro, singing in the church choir, and was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Sturdy Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Attleboro Housing Authority, among her many interests.Shirley enjoyed trips to North Carolina, taking ocean cruises with friends, and simply being by the water. She was a true New Englander, and loved her Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, especially reveling in their recent championships. She took great pride and joy in her five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her beloved children: her son, Alan S. Currie and his wife, Cathleen M. Currie of Manchester, CT; their children: Jennifer Currie and her husband, Michael Jannitto; and their children: Caitlyn and Meghan Jannitto; Christopher and Lyndsie Currallo, and their child, Parker Currallo; Geoffrey Currie; and Bryan Currie; and her son, Paul M. Currie and his wife, Rosario Currie, and their son, Charles P. Currie, of Chaddsford, PA. Family and friends are invited to honor and remember Shirley by gathering for a Visitation on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA.
