Scott Francis Viera, 44, of Perez Street, Attleboro, died on Friday, March 7, 2008 at his residence surrounded by the love of his family following an illness first diagnosed in May 2002. He was the husband of Kelli L. (Ryan) Viera to whom he was married on October 7, 1995.Born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 7, 1963, he was raised and educated in East Greenwich where he wrestled on the varsity wrestling team. He practiced freestyle and Greco-Roman having had won Rhode Island titles in both styles in the senior division.At Rhode Island College, Viera earned All-New England honors. In 1988, he participated in the Regional Olympic trials.He coached at various levels for more than 20 years. Mr. Viera served as the first head wrestling coach in Roger Williams University history, piloting the Hawks to a 2-11 record in the team?s inaugural season of 1991 ? 1992.For the past twelve seasons, Viera had been the top assistant to head coach Dave Kemmy. From 1993 ? 1995, he served as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University, an NCAA Division One school.Viera also served three years as head coach at East Greenwich High School where he produced a New England high school champion and an All-American. He served as an assistant coach for the former Bristol High School, now Mount Hope High School, where he worked with Coach Kemmy. Mr. Viera served in the local chapter of the national wrestling organization, USA Wrestling and was to be inducted into the Rhode Island Wrestling Hall of Fame later this month.He served as state vice chairman and as a National Team coach for five years. Since September 2001, Mr. Viera was employed as a district manager for Friendly Ice Cream Corporation serving southern Massachusetts and northern Rhode Island territories.A resident of Attleboro since July 1999, he previously resided in Clarkston, Michigan and Newport, Rhode Island. A member and co-chairperson of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute Adult Advisory Council, he was a national public speaker for the organization.In Attleboro, Mr. Viera was a member of the Attleboro Zoning Board of Appeals and was a member of the City of Attleboro Superintendent of Public Schools Search Committee.In addition to his wife of 12 years, he leaves two daughters: Courtney A. Viera, age 9, and Sydney A. Viera, age 6, both at home in Attleboro; his father: Francis Abel Viera and his wife, Patricia Viera, of Cranston, Rhode Island. He was predeceased in death by his mother, the late Anna Mary (Pellini) Viera. He is also survived by his two sisters: Amy A. Morris (Bob) of North Smithfield, Rhode Island and Maryann Tegenborg (Craig) of Williamsburg, Virginia; his brother: Peter C. Viera of Charleston, South Carolina; his stepmother: Joan Viera of Bluffton, South Carolina; his paternal grandfather: Justin Wood of Riverside, Rhode Island; his wife?s parents: Hubert B. and Nancy A. (Nersessian) Ryan of DeWitt, Michigan and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and student athletes. He was the maternal grandson of the late Amerigo and Mary R. Thomas Rita, Pastor of St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, Attleboro Falls, officiating.Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery and Arboretum, North Attleboro.
