Sandra Wu Cheng, 65, died on Thursday, December 6, 2018, from head injuries she sustained in a fall on April 5, 2018.
Born to Wu Hon Sing and Kwok Yick Ming on December 11, 1952, in Hong Kong, she studied at St. Margaret's Girls' College in Hong Kong and Cognitio College in Kowloon.
Hers is the quintessential story of a successful immigrant. In 1971 she came to the United States to study at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, earning her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. She married Mark Cheng of Taiwan in nearby Columbia, South Carolina, on February 28, 1976, and the couple had two children, Mark Jr. and Karolyne.
Earning her U.S. citizenship in 1984, Mrs. Cheng worked as Chief of Nutrition in Dallas-area hospitals before moving to North Attleboro in 1988. Hired as Director of Nutrition at Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, she ultimately rose to the position of Senior Vice President of Operations and had a distinguished career of faithful service.
Widowed in 1991, Sandra was a devoted mother, raising her children with the support of her family, friends, neighbors, and the congregation at the Chinese Christian Church of Rhode Island, where she was a church Deaconess, translator, and member of the Board of Directors. Sandra was a past board member of the YMCA in Providence and the Junior League of Rhode Island, and a Distinguished Research Professor of Law at Southern Methodist University.
She loved traveling the world, playing the piano, and golf. A successful entrepreneur, she owned two facilities for the fitness studio Curves. Sandra is remembered for her vigorous health and energy, her unfailing cheer, her kindness, her dedication to friends and family, and her larger-than-life personality.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark Cheng Jr. and Christie Cheng of Plano, Texas, and her granddaughter Hannah; her daughter and son-in-law, Karolyne Cheng Garner and Bryan Garner of Dallas, Texas, and her granddaughters Caroline of Los Angeles, California, and Alexandra of New York City; and six siblings: Stephen Woo, Woon Kuen, Faye Wong, Shirley Wu, and Jenny Li-all of Hong Kong-and Daniel Wu of Plano, Texas.
Funeral Services for Sandra will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chinese Christian Church of Rhode Island, 333 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI 02860.
Mrs. Cheng will be buried in a private service beside her late husband in Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
