Salvatore "Sam" C. Pino, 85, of North Main Street, Attleboro, died on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as he was surrounded by his loving wife and all seven cherished children. He was the husband of Noela G. (Doucette) Pino to whom he was married on November 3, 1956. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on January 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Rosario and Pauline (Nasise) Pino. He was raised and educated in Norton. He was a veteran of the United States Army having achieved the rank of Corporal ER. Mr. Pino earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in 1958. As a clinical chemist, he published and co-published numerous papers in the field of iodine deficiency and thyroid dysfunction. The methods he helped develop for the measurement of iodine were novel, robust, reproducible and cost-effective, allowing medical researchers to collect the data they required to further the study of thyroid function. His work won him both national and international recognition and invitations to speak at seminars all over the world. Mr. Pino was a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. He worked for numerous companies and most recently at the Boston Medical Center. He resided in Attleboro since 1956 and was a communicant of St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. For many years, he and his wife hosted foreign exchange students. In addition to his wife, he leaves seven children: Beth M. Pino-Mauch of Amesbury; Thomas C. Pino of North Scituate, Rhode Island; Anthony G. Pino of Rehoboth; John P. Pino of Derry, New Hampshire; Samuel P. Pino of Columbus, Ohio; Paul J. Pino of Gorham, Maine and Maria P. Butters of Walpole; eleven grandchildren; a sister: Margaret Pino of North Attleboro and several extended family members and dear friends. Visitation has been respectfully omitted. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, Stanley Street, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Thomas A. Frechette, Pastor, officiating. Rev. Andre "Father Pat" Patenaude of the National Shrine of Our Lady of LaSalette, Attleboro, will be providing the gift of music. Burial will be private in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, MacArthur Boulevard, Bourne. There will be no funeral cortege from the funeral home prior to commencement of the Funeral Mass. Following church services, an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the Lafayette House on Route 1 in Foxboro ( http://lafayettehouse.com/ ).
