Ruth E. (Alden) Bishop, 97, of Charles Street, South Burlington, Vermont, died on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Plainville, Massachusetts where she made her home for the past six months. She was the beloved wife of Ray Bishop to whom she was married on April 14, 1940 in Montpelier, Vermont and celebrated more than 74 years of marriage. Born in Montpelier, Vermont on June 12, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Chauncey George and Edith G. (Gamble) Alden. She was a graduating member of the Class of 1935 at Montpelier High School. Mrs. Bishop was a 20 plus year member of the Civil Air Patrol, assigned to the personnel office, and achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel. She loved it when saluted by the cadets. Prior to her retirement in 1992, Mrs. Bishop was employed as a receptionist at the Brown Animal Hospital in South Burlington for more than 25 years where she was affectionately known simply as "Mrs. B.". She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed creating counted cross stitch work. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bishop leaves two children: Janet Bishop Magina and her husband, Robert A. Magina, of Plainville and Robert R. Bishop of South Burlington, Vermont; four grandchildren: Kent Lavalla of Barnstead, New Hampshire; Brett Lavalla of Redwood City, California; Craig Magina of Attleboro, MA and Michael Magina of Middleboro, MA; two great grandchildren: Michael and Anabela; a sister: Dorothy Deep of Oakdale, Connecticut and many extended family members and friends. She was the mother of the late Louise F. Bishop who died in November 2013 and was the sister of the late Elinor Robinson. The family expresses their sincere gratitude to the Community Visiting Nurse Agency in Attleboro, Massachusetts for their dedication and support the last several months.
