Russell E. Marchand, 90, of Cumberland, RI, formerly of Attleboro died peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island in Pawtucket, RI. He was the husband and best friend of Jane R. (Reed) Marchand to whom he was married on September 22, 1952. Born in Rochester, NH, on October 8, 1924, he was the son of the late Walter and Marie Laura (Bergeron) Marchand. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman in the Pacific Theater of War. He was later recalled in the Korean War and stationed in the U.S. A graduate of George Williams College, Chicago, IL, and Bridgewater State Teachers College, he attended Colgate University on a National Science Foundation Scholarship. He was a teacher of science at the secondary level in Rehoboth and Attleboro for 21 years. After retiring from teaching in 1976, he started a second career of producing multimedia presentations. He produced a series of programs on the history of garden design, photographing notable gardens around the world. His garden programs were shown in 24 states and the District of Columbia. He was on the National Speakers List of the Garden Club of America and photos of 12 American gardens are in the Smithsonian's Archives of American Gardens. Russell was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Wrentham, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Boston Athenaeum, the Attleboro Rotary Club and a subscriber to the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He had a lifelong passion for music, learning and the arts. He will be remembered for his hearty laugh, his zest for life and connecting with people. In addition to his wife, Russell is survived by his daughters: Patricia Berry of Attleboro, and Andrea Giannini and her husband, Jay, of North Attleboro and his four grandchildren: Matthew and Emily Giannini and Devin and Briana Berry. Family and friends are welcome to attend a Memorial Gathering and a time to share memories with the family on Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 10:00 - 11:00 AM in the "Great Room" at Emerald Bay Manor, 10 Old Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, Rhode Island followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Paula Toland of St. John's Episcopal Church, Franklin, officiating. Parking assistance will be available for attendees from the main entry way of the facility. Following services an invitation will be extended to join the family for continued fellowship and refreshments at the facility. A private burial will be held in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at a later date.
