Robert William Haggerty, Sr., 64, who was known simply as ?Coach Haggerty? to local athletes, of Barrows Street, Norton, formerly of High Street, Cumberland, Rhode Island, died on Friday, May 26, 2006 at his residence surrounded by his loving and supportive family following a three year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the husband of Joan W. (Titmas) Haggerty. Born in the Ballardvale section of Andover, Massachusetts on August 12, 1941, he was the son of Bernice (Mundy) Haggerty of Andover and the late Franklin K. Haggerty. He was raised and educated in Andover where he was a 1959 graduate of Andover High School where he was a member of the football and baseball teams and served as the Captain of the baseball team during the 1959 season. He later attended Merrimack College. He was employed as a metallurgist and shop manager for S.M. Heat Treating Company in North Attleboro since 1968. He recently moved to Norton after having been a resident of Cumberland, Rhode Island for 10 years. Prior to moving to Rhode Island, Mr. Haggerty was a resident of Mashpee. He and his wife raised their family in Attleboro where they previously resided for many years and where they were communicants of St. John the Evangelist Church. A lifelong sports enthusiast, ?Coach Haggerty? dedicated years to the youth of North Attleboro, Attleboro and Rehoboth as he served as a youth baseball coach, soccer coach, ice hockey coach and Pop Warner football coach. His direction, support and guidance aided hundreds of local athletes over his decades of service to the community. He was a member of the Southern Massachusetts Baseball Umpiring Association. Mr. Haggerty was an ardent pool player who participated and won numerous tournaments. His greatest legacy is that of a wonderful, caring, devoted grandfather who took great pride in each of his seven grandchildren?s accomplishments. In addition to his wife and mother, he leaves a very special daughter: Valerie Haggerty-Silva and her husband, Paul Silva, of Rehoboth; a wonderful son: Michael Haggerty and his wife, Leanne (Curran) Haggerty, of East Sandwich; seven grandchildren: Shane and Emily Silva of Rehoboth; Alexandra and Michaela Haggerty of Cumberland and Sarah, Olivia and Robbie Haggerty of East Sandwich; a daughter-n-law: Mary (Volpe) Haggerty of Cumberland; three sisters: Joan Pelletier of North Andover; Jerilyn Marjerison of Andover and Nancy Varnum of North Andover; a companion: Carol Bridges of Attleboro and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Robert W. Haggerty, Jr. who died in 1995. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Funeral Service on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 8:00 PM in the ?Memorial Chapel? of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, funeral home mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2006 from 5:00 ? 8:00 PM prior to the commencement of funeral services at 8:00 PM. Supervised children?s room available during visitation and the funeral service. Those in need of a ride to visitation may call the funeral home at (508) 695-0200 for an advance reservation for such gratis transportation.
