Robert V. Sharkey

Robert V. Sharkey, 78, known simply as "Shark" to his family and friends, of Deanville Road, Attleboro and Bluffton, South Carolina passed away on Monday, March 25, 2013 at the Medical University of South Carolina following a brief battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Eve P. (Horser) Sharkey, a native of England, with whom he treasured 37 years of blissful marriage. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on May 9, 1934, he was a son of the late Robert W. and Ismay (King) Sharkey. He carried a colorful legacy as large as his six foot, six inch frame and he jokingly referred to himself as the "World's Oldest Teenager. He and his wife raised their family in Cheshire, Connecticut before moving to New Hampshire in 1974 and settling in Keene and later Dublin. Mr. Sharkey proudly served his country with the United States Army for two years at the end of the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Electrical Engineering and spent most of his professional career as a Sales Engineer within the high technology field. Mr. Sharkey retired at the age of 69 and dedicated his time to his garden, his woodworking shop, volunteering with the Attleboro Department of Veteran's Affairs office and writing thoughtful letters to the Sun Chronicle newspaper. He was also a strong supporter of the Attleboro Farmers Market. In South Carolina, he belonged to the Sun City Roadrunners and rode his beloved 1966 BMW motorcycle twice a weekly, He was a talented craftsman who could build and repair anything from rocking horses to cabinets to houses. A fine raconteur, he was known by some as Attleboro's "Most Interesting Man" who knew the city's history and where many of the bodies were buried; active in his fraternity, Theta Chi and assisted organizing and attending his high school reunions He was a proud member of the Attleborough Historic Society and Past President of two Lions Club organizations in New Hampshire. He was the recipient of the Rotary Club's Melvin Jones award. He leaves his children: Bill Sharkey of Simsbury, Connecticut and Martha Sharkey Morgan of Medford; his grandsons: Matthew, Michael and Nicholas Sharkey and Brian and Zachary Morgan and a granddaughter: Kirsty Sharkey. He is predeceased by his daughter: Susan Sharkey and his sister: Ruth Keegan. Family and friends will be invited to attend an informal gathering to Celebrate His Life at a later date.
