Robert Franklin Mayers, Jr., 82, of Garfield Avenue, Attleboro; formerly of Debby Lane, Raynham and Thacher Street, Attleboro, died on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts. He was the beloved husband of Cesina "Cena" (Sylvester) Mayers to whom he was married on August 6, 1960 in South Attleboro, Massachusetts. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on February 26, 1932, he was a son of the late Robert F. Mayers, Sr. and Mabel P. (Siegfried) Mayers. He was raised and educated in the City of Attleboro where he remained a lifelong resident with the exception of ten years that he recently resided in Raynham. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design in 1955 and was employed in the HVAC program by General Motors in Dedham. Mr. Mayers was a proud Army veteran having served with the United States Army during the Korean War from his enlistment on November 18, 1952 until his honorable discharge on November 17, 1954 having achieved the rank of Private First Class (T). He was the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, two overseas service bars and was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for acts of heroism. Mr. Mayers was a professional machinist having been employed by Antaya's Brothers in Attleboro for 32 years and for 10 years at Automatic Machine in Attleboro prior to his retirement in 1980. Mr. Mayers was a longtime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks - Lodge #1014 in Attleboro, the American Legion Post #311 in Seekonk, the American Legion Post #312 in South Attleboro and was a longtime member of the North Attleboro Lions Club where he had served as president for one term. He enjoyed building models, was an antique car enthusiast and treasured the times spent in years past camping with family and friends. His smile, his special ways will linger from day to day and will be forever cherished by his family. He loved his family "as big as the sky and beyond" and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He leaves a legacy as a caring, dedicated and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. In addition to his wife of more than 54 years, he leaves three children: Thomas R. Mayers and his wife, Kim E. (Schoeppner) Mayers of Seekonk; Tina Marie Pothier of Seekonk and Timothy R. Mayers and his wife, Sandra P. (Lynch) Mayers of Cumberland, Rhode Island; ten grandchildren: Jenn, Amy , David, Evan, Steven, Stephanie, Sarah, Kevin, Jamie and Emily; a great granddaughter: Jordan; a sister: Carolyn Graham of Florida; several nieces and nephews, extended family members, many dear friends and his beloved canine companion, "Sarge". He was the brother of the late Louise P. Belanger who died on March 12, 2006. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Funeral Service with Veteran's Honors on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 8:30 AM from the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 133 North Main Street - Route 152, Attleboro. Military honors will be bestowed in recognition of Mr. Mayer's service to his country following the Funeral Mass. Burial will be private in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Children's room is available during the visitation and while the funeral cortege is being organized.
