Robert Joseph "Bucky" Benoit, Sr., 96, of Tremont Street, Rehoboth, a proud and retired farmer and carpenter, died surrounded by the love and devotion of his family on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Dighton Nursing Home in Dighton, Massachusetts where he had been a resident since November. He was the beloved husband of the late Gladys Mae (McKearney) Benoit to whom he was married on February 28, 1949. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 18, 1917, he was a son of the late Louis and Laura E. (Beaudoin) Benoit. He was educated in the City of Cambridge before the family moved to the country and settled in Rehoboth more than 80 years ago. Mr. Benoit saw many changes moving from the city to the country. He immediately embraced his love for farming and for decades worked the land and oversaw livestock. In earlier years, Mr. Benoit was an active member of the Bristol County 4H program and enjoyed attending livestock auctions and county fairs. When not farming and caring for animals, he enjoyed gardening. However, his favorite pastime was making hay and celebrating the end of yet another farming season. Mr. Benoit was an accomplished carpenter having first performed around the farmyard and later for various companies as a member of the Union Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America - Local 535, Norwood to which he belonged for more than 15 years. He was a former communicant of the former St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, Taunton. He leaves four children: Robert J. Benoit, Jr. and his wife, Barbara A. (Gill) Benoit, of Rehoboth; Stephen L. Benoit of Sandwich; Pamela J. Alexson of Rehoboth and Lisa A. LaCombe and her husband, John G. "Jack" LaCombe, Jr., of Rehoboth; his grandchildren: Tanya E. Benoit, Jennifer L. Pouliot, Laura E. Spath, Sarah C. Curry, Tiffany M. Benoit, Daniel L. Benoit, Timothy P. Alexson, and the late Christopher R. Benoit who died in 1994 and ten great grandchildren. He also leaves his sister: Doris Robinson of Rockford, Michigan. He was the brother of the late Leo Benoit. He also leaves his late wife's siblings: Janet A. Dyer and her husband, Edward A. Dyer, of Seekonk; Richard A. McKearney and his wife, Betty McKearney, of Attleboro; Raymond C. McKearney and his wife, Elizabeth McKearney, of Rehoboth; Gary S. McKearney and his wife, Kim McKearney, of Rehoboth; two sisters-in-law: Betty Lou McKearney, wife of the late James Leo McKearney, Jr., of Wrentham and Helen McKearney, wife of the late Ronald E. "Mac" McKearney, of Rehoboth; three generations of nieces and nephews, extended family members and dear friends. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Relatives and Friends are cordially invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, One Power Street, Norton. There will be no funeral cortege from the funeral home prior to the commencement of the funeral Mass. Burial will follow Steven's Corner Cemetery, Rehoboth. A children's room is available during visitation. An invitation will be extended to join the family for a continuation of the celebration of Mr. Benoit's life following graveside services through fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced.
