Obituary

Richard (Dick) T. Hammond, 91, of Plainville, MA passed away on March 30, 2026, at Milford Gardens Rehabilitation Center in Milford, MA. He was the beloved husband of the late Sandra L. (Roberts) Hammond, to whom he had been married for 70 years. They were married on May 7, 1955, and shared a lifetime of love and devotion until her passing on May 22, 2025.

Born in Boston, MA on September 11, 1934, Dick was the son of the late John and Catherine (Whiting) Hammond. He was raised and educated in the North Attleboro school system and remained deeply connected to the community throughout his life.

Dick is survived by his loving children, Steven Hammond and his wife, Jean (Bergh) Hammond, of Wrentham, MA, and Vickie Hammond and her fiancé, Thomas Gemelli, of North Attleboro, MA. He was a proud grandfather to Jason Dube of Dalton, NH, Matthew Hammond of Norwood, MA, and Kyle Hammond and his wife, Megan Hammond, of North Attleboro, MA. He was also a cherished great-grandfather to Brayden Hammond, Kiley Dube, Sawyer Dube, Declan Hammond, and Harper Hammond. He is further survived by his sister, Judith Roy of Attleboro, MA; his sister-in-law, Barbara Hassell of Phoenix, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.

As a child, in the 1940s, Dick attended Oldtown Church in North Attleboro, where he helped care for the horses at the carriage house and proudly rang the church bell. As a teenager, he worked on a farm in Attleboro and developed a strong work ethic that stayed with him throughout his life. He also enjoyed roller skating and ice skating in his younger years.

Dick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, beginning a lifelong devotion to his country. His service fostered a deep patriotism, a profound respect for fellow veterans and active-duty service members, and a love for the American flag, which he proudly flew every day. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 217 in Plainville, MA, and was formerly active with the North Attleboro Elks.

Dick held many jobs over the years, reflecting both his versatility and strong work ethic. He worked as an auto body mechanic in Mansfield, MA, and later as a cook at Peg Leg's in Attleboro and Peg Leg Pete's in North Attleboro. A self-taught carpenter, he worked for several local construction companies and later ran Attleboro Milling, where he refined his skills as a finish carpenter. Through his work, he formed a lasting friendship with Dr. Kevin Brousseau; the two remained close friends for more than 30 years and continued their tradition of weekly lunches after Dick's retirement.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Dick loved hockey and proudly coached the North Stars hockey team from 1974 to 1976. He was also exceptionally artistic, teaching himself painting on canvas, bottles, and slate, carved wood, and built furniture, leaving behind tangible reminders of his remarkable talent.

An avid bicyclist, Dick spent many weekends riding with friends to Plymouth, MA or bicycle rides to Maine, Vermont, Quebec and Montreal, Canada.
