Richard Alden Woodward, "Dick," passed away on November 30th, 2022, at his Nokomis, FL home with family and friends by his side. Richard A. Woodward was born in Plainville, MA on July 30, 1926. He was the son of Oswin and Marion Woodward, and brother to the late Clifford "Cip" Woodward and the late Barbara Johnson. As a child, Richard enjoyed spending time with friends, fishing, bike riding, and racing box cars. He was a Boy Scout and had an avid interest in trains, airplanes, and all things mechanical. Upon graduating from Plainville High School in 1944, he began his military career starting with The Merchant Marines and later attended King's Point Marine Academy at Navel Headquarters. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in WW2 in 1945, touring the Caribbean on the USS George Washington. He later took employment at the Northrop Corporation as an engineer and designer of military equipment focusing on submarines. He married the late Geraldine Desjardins in 1947, sharing three children together. The late David Woodward, the late Miles Woodward, and Crystal Maddocks. He later met and married the love of his life, Lorraine Achorn, in the Spring of 1970. Dick adopted Lorraine's two children, Chuck Woodward, and his sister Diane Lindemayer. After retiring, Dick and Lorraine settled in Nokomis, Florida. It is here they enjoyed many long hours of sunshine and sea breeze together with family and friends. Moving forward some years later, Lorraine fell ill with ALS. Dick remained her dedicated and loving caretaker until she passed in 2002. Later in his life, Dick filled his days with volunteering as a companion and offering assistance to the veterans of Sarasota. He continued this important work and charity for more than a decade.
Throughout these many purposeful years of his life, Dick always showed unwavering love and care for those around him. He was generous with a resolute commitment to those in need, while never wanting to take credit for it. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family; His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Dick is survived by his three children, Crystal Maddocks, Chuck Woodward, and Diane Lindemayer.
