Retired Sgt. Robert E. Dion, Attleboro Police Department, 96, of Attleboro, MA passed away at his residence surrounded by his loving family on December 2. 2024. He was the husband of the late Joan F. (Dwyer) Dion to whom he was married on October 4, 1952, and who entered into eternal rest on September 2, 2020. At the time of his wife's death, they had been married for 68 years.

Born in Franklin, MA on August 1, 1928, he was a son of the late Joseph F. Dion and the late Emma (Morse) Dion. Raised and educated in his native community, Mr. Dion was a 1948 graduate of Franklin High School. He was a 1974 graduate of Dean Junior College and attended the F.B.I. National Academy in 1974 and was recently recognized for his 50th anniversary where he received a standing ovation for his commitment to law enforcement.

Prior to entering law enforcement, Mr. Dion was a proud veteran of the United States military having honorably served in the Marine Corps.

He served with the Town of Franklin Police Department form 1950-1953 and then began his career with the City of Attleboro Police Department and retired in 1985 following 35 years of service and having achieved the rank of sergeant.

The Dion family are longtime communicants of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Attleboro.

He was a retired member of the Attleboro Police Association, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, a member of the Attleboro Retirees Association, a member of the New England Chapter of the F.B.I. National Academy Association, an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus - St. John's Council #404; a member of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association and the Attleboro Preservation Society for many years.

Mr. Dion leaves his children: John R. Dion and his wife, Holly Dion, of Scituate, Rhode Island; Ret. Thomas E. Dion, A.P.D. and his wife, Wellma Dion, of Attleboro, MA; Wiliam J. Dion and his wife, Susan Dion, of Simi Valley, CA and Cheryl Mansuetti of Warwick, RI; seven grandchildren; a brother: Ronald Dion and extended family members and many dear friends and colleagues.

He was the brother of the late Ruth M. (Dion) Vars and the late Joseph F. Dion.

Visitation has been respectfully omitted.

Family and friends are warmly welcome to attend a Mass of Christian Burial with the City of Attleboro Police Honors on Friday, December 20, 2024, at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, North Main Street, Attleboro, MA.

Burial with military honors will follow at St. John's Cemetery, West Street, Attleboro, MA.

Please omit flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Dion's name may be made to Hope Health Hospice, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.

The family wishes to thank Bristol Aging and Wellness, Inc. of Fall River, MA for the meals on wheels program and the home health aide services which made it easier for Dad to age in place and to the Hope Health Team, especially, Joann, for their caring touch.
