Raymond Carl Oberg, 90, of Attleboro, MA, formerly of Norton, MA, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, MA because of Covid-19 despite having been fully vaccinated and having received his booster. He was the husband of the late Marjory "Margie" Mae (Holbrook) Oberg, to whom he was married on December 2, 1979, and who died on April 4, 2021.
Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on June 10, 1931, he was a son of the late Carl O. Oberg and the late Edna (Johnson) Oberg. He was raised and educated in Pawtucket, where he was a graduate of the former Pawtucket East High School. He proudly served with the United States Air Force from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1955.
Mr. Oberg was a professional photographer who was the manager for more than 20 years of the Camera Shop in Attleboro. He was also the president and superintendent of both Oak Knoll Cemetery in Rehoboth and Hillside Cemetery in Attleboro.
Mr. Oberg was a licensed real estate broker for Ed Pariseau Century 21 in North Attleboro for 6 years and served as the deputy tax collector for the communities of Attleboro, Wrentham, and Mansfield for nine years before retiring from that position in 1992.
He resided in Attleboro for more than 40 years, having previously resided in Norton, MA.
Raymond attended Centenary United Methodist Church in Attleboro where he was a member of the choir.
He was a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps and the Jewelry City Harmonettes.
An active member of the Order of the Masons, Mr. Oberg was member and past master of the Ezekiel Bates Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Attleboro, was a member of the Bristol Lodge A.F. & A.M. in North Attleboro, MA and was a 32nd degree Mason.
Mr. Oberg was also a Captain of the Grand Royal Arch and was high priest of the King Hyrum Chapter.
He was the past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star #41, Attleboro; past grand patron of the Grand Chapter of the Massachusetts Order of the Eastern Star, was a member and past commander of the American Legion #20 in Attleboro and served the community as a justice of the peace having presided over countless weddings.
He leaves his children: Thomas Oberg of New Bern, North Carolina; Raymond L. Oberg and his wife, Janice (McDermont) Oberg of Florida; William L. Oberg of New Haven, CT and Ruth Ellen Farmer and her husband, Michael W. Farmer, of Attleboro, MA; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Ruth Caranci.
With strict adherence to current applicable Covid-19 health precautions, including social distancing and the use of facemasks, family and friends are cordially invited to attend a Visitation on Monday, December 20, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 15 Sanford Street, Attleboro, MA. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary.
Inurnment with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, South Main Street, Attleboro, MA.
