Peter Halko

Peter Halko, 84, formerly of Carleton Street, South Attleboro, died on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham following a period of declining health. Born in Central Falls, Rhode Island on March 19, 1926, he was a son of the late Alexander and Tessie (Kuruta) Halko. He was a resident of Central Falls until moving to South Attleboro where he resided for most of his life. Mr. Halko was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served from May 29, 1944 until his honorable discharge on May 20, 1946 having achieved the rank of Private First Class. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for heroic service at Iwo Jima from February 19, 1945 - March 14, 1945. In earlier years, Mr. Halko was employed as a lineman for Massachusetts Electric. He was raised and remained on the family farm in South Attleboro for most of his life where he enjoyed times spent riding the tractor around the farm property. He leaves a sister: Stella Halko of South Attleboro; two brothers: Michael Halko of Norton and John Halko of South Attleboro and two generations of nieces and nephews. Mr. Halko was the brother of the late Jules Halko and Steven Halko. Private visitation will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2010 in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Private graveside services will follow at North Purchase Cemetery, North Main Street, Attleboro with the Rev. Sandra D. Fitz-Henry, Pastor of Murray Unitarian Universalist Church, North Main Street, Attleboro, officiating. Burial will follow.
