Paul A. Fitzgerald, Jr., 78, of Attleboro, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Madonna Manor Nursing Home in North Attleboro where he had been a short-term resident. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Mary K. (Krueger) Fitzgerald with whom he shared more than thirty-five blissful years of marriage since their nuptials on May 3, 1979. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts on December 31, 1936, he was a son of the late Paul A. Fitzgerald, Sr. and Agatha E. (Teiling) Fitzgerald. He was raised and educated in Worcester. Mr. Fitzgerald was a veteran of the Massachusetts and Connecticut National Guard and the United States Marine Corps. He was employed as the Head of Maintenance at the former Wrentham State School, now the Wrentham Developmental Center, in Wrentham for many years prior to her retirement in 1988. He was previously employed by Robelle's. A giving, caring, generous man, he will be lovingly remembered for his sense of humor and infectious smile. He was a man of strong religious convictions and celebrated his faith at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Mr. Fitzgerald was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus having first been a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #330 in North Attleboro where he served as a Grand Knight for one year and for the past several years a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #404 in Attleboro where he has served as the Grand Knight for more than ten years and as the Faithful Navigator of the 4th degree. He enjoyed helping others and enjoyed volunteering to serve as Santa during holiday events at local dog shelters or for other organizations. Mr. Fitzgerald was a volunteer for the North Attleboro Kid's Day program, enjoyed traveling and had a lifelong love and appreciation for animals. He was selflessly devoted to his wife and she was to him. In addition to his cherished wife, he leaves a brother: Ray F. Fitzgerald in California; a cousin: Gen Marquez in California; a sister-in-law: Wilma C. Rogers and her husband, J. C. Rogers, in Mississippi; a brother-in-law: George W. Krueger and his companion, Jan Spiegel, of Chicago, Illinois; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends. He was the brother of the late Rita Fitzgerald who died in 1990. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Knights of Columbus Honors on Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM in the "Commonwealth Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend the funeral on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 8:30 AM from the "Commonwealth Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, Stanley Street, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Thomas Frechette, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society - Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
