Mary Frances McCarthy, 102, of Washington Street, Plainville, died on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the Harrington House in Walpole where she had been a resident for the past ten years. She was the wife of the late William J. McCarthy who died in June 1979. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 24, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Walsh) Dowd, Irish immigrants. She was raised and educated in Boston and was a resident of Roslindale for many years before moving to Rockland in 1979 where she resided for ten years prior to moving to Plainville in 1989. Mrs. McCarthy was a devoted and dedicated homemaker to her family and had also been employed as an attendant at the former Home for Italian Children in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston for ten years. Since moving to the Attleboro area, Mrs. McCarthy attended St. John the Evangelist Church. She enjoyed time spent reading, watching soap operas and dedicated to family. She leaves two children: Patricia Hagerty and her husband, Cornelius T. Hagerty, of Plainville with whom she resided for many years and William McCarthy and his wife, Alyce (Boswell) McCarthy, of Marshfield; six grandchildren: Colleen Hurley and her husband, Ken Hurley, of Norwood; Neil Hagerty and his wife, Heather Hagerty, of Westford; Michael Hagerty and his wife, Tina Hagerty, of Wrentham; Christine McCarthy of Washington, DC; Brendon McCarthy of Rockland and Jeanne McCarthy of Roslindale; 8 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. She was the sister of the late Florence Foley, Rita Bianci, Joseph Dowd, John Dowd and Francis Dowd. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation TODAY - WEDNESDAY, January 23, 2012 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on the left) Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the funeral from the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home on THURSDAY, January 24, 2013 at 7:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 8:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main Street - Route 152, Attleboro. Burial will follow in Mount Benedict Cemetery, Boston. Following cemetery services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. McCarthy's name may be made to the People First Home Care and Hospice, 130 Rumford Avenue - Suite 211, Auburndale, MA 02466.
