Mary Lucia (Mason) Hjerpe

June 13, 1929 — January 9, 2023

Mary Lucia Hjerpe, 93, of North Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2023, at her daughter's South Washington Street home where she had been living for 10 years. She was the wife of the late William Garfield Hjerpe, with whom she shared 70 extraordinarily happy years of marriage.
Born on June 13, 1929, in Worcester, MA, Mary Lou was the daughter of the late Homer F. Mason and the late Mary L (Savage) Mason.
Raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, and attending city schools, Mary Lou became an executive secretary at State Mutual Insurance Company for a short time before marrying and accompanying her naval officer husband to Charleston, Norfolk, Key West, and St. Augustine during the Korean War. After returning to Massachusetts, she lived for several years with her growing family in an Auburn house she and her husband designed and built and then, for almost a decade, in Westmount, Montreal.
In 1968, the family moved to Grant Street in North Attleboro.  At all three locations, she took pride in creating a beautiful and welcoming home where so many warm and joyful friend and family gatherings took place.
Like her husband, Mary Lou had limitless energy and love for her children, and as a family they embraced together much of what life had to offer. With adventuresome enthusiasm and without pause, she mapped out travel: month-long cross USA and Europe driving trips, short jaunts to a Florida Space Shuttle launch or a White House Easter Egg Roll, and, ever resourceful, a fun campout in a 12-man tent during the 1976 Olympic games when all hotel rooms were booked. Her resourcefulness and love of life and learning, as well as her amazing work ethic, integrity, and respect for others were traits she modeled and thereby gifted to those close to her.
Mary Lou leaves four children and their families: William M. Hjerpe and his wife, Donna, of Ft. Myers, FL and Houston, TX; Cynthia S. Hedberg and her husband, Herbert, of North Attleboro, MA; Dr. Wayne G. Hjerpe of Dennis, MA and Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and Eric F Hjerpe and his wife, Karol, of Sudbury, MA. She deeply loved her grandchildren: Elisabeth, Katherine, Bill, Mason, Mary Lou, Linnea, Lars, Ingrid, and Dayna, and her great-grandchildren: Isabelle, John, Abby, Grace, Eli, Anders, Greta, and Elia, as well as her nephew, Bruce Anderson and his wife, Bobbi; and her niece, Martha Connor and her husband, Chuck and her cherished cousin, Joni Crowell-Meleski.
All services for Mary Lou will be privately held.
