Martin Charles Gavin, a longtime news photographer, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, following a valiant battle with brain cancer.

Martin enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a photographer with The Sun Chronicle in Attleboro, later working with various portrait studios taking photos of proms and sporting events for inclusion in high school yearbooks. Outside of his professional life, Martin was an avid traveler who took nearly 40 trips to Ireland. He was an active member of two Irish language study groups and possessed a deep love for the Irish language as well as the history, music, and film of Ireland. He was also widely admired for his sharp wit and his impressive skill at Trivial Pursuit.

At 71, Martin married his fiancée, Nancy Rabinowitz, in a beautiful ceremony at the historic Dan'l Webster Inn in Sandwich on Cape Cod. Following their wedding, they moved from the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston to the Town of Franklin. They had hoped to honeymoon in Ireland or Malta, but Martin's illness prevented them from traveling.

A native of Watertown, Massachusetts, Martin earned a degree in journalism from Suffolk University. He was predeceased by his parents, John F. and Marie (née Carciero) Gavin. In addition to his wife, he is survived by several cousins and his brother-in-law, Carl Rabinowitz of Jamaica Plain. He also cultivated many treasured friendships and always enriched the lives of those who knew him. People loved his affable, unassuming disposition, and his many friends are profoundly saddened by his passing.

A Funeral Service will be held on June 29, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, North Attleboro. A reception will follow at the Colonel Blackinton Inn in Attleboro.
