Mario Scherma, 77, of Daggett Avenue, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, died on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Hospice Facility in Providence, Rhode Island where he had been a patient for the previous five days. He was the beloved husband of Janet I. (Wright) Scherma to whom he was married on September 25, 1959. Born in East Boston, Massachusetts on January 16, 1936, he was a son of the late Ciro and Katherine (Nostra) Scherma. He was raised and educated in Boston and received his Associate Degree in Business Management from Johnson & Wales in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Scherma was a veteran of the United States Army having served from his induction on November 22, 1954 until his honorable discharge on August 24, 1956. In earlier years, Mr. Scherma was employed as a compositor and production manager for the former Transcript newspaper group in Dedham and for the former L. G. Balfour Company in Attleboro. For 22 years, Mr. Scherma was an owner and operator of the former Jerimars Pub on County Street, Attleboro prior to his retirement in 1996. He was the winner of the First Annual Boston Chili Fest in 1992. A resident of Pawtucket, Rhode Island for the past 14 years, Mr. Scherma also enjoyed the winter months in Clearwater, Florida for the past eight years and was a former resident of the City of Attleboro for more than 40 years. Mr. Scherma served as a member of the City of Attleboro Zoning Board several years ago; was a coach for the South Attleboro White Hawk Football League and was a former member of the Attleboro Rotary Club. In addition to his wife, he leaves two children: Mari E. Sennott and her husband, Hank Sennott, of Sandwich and David A. Scherma and his wife, Jill M. (Costa) Scherma, of Seekonk; his cherished grandchildren: Meaghan A. Sennott of Sandwich and Garrett R. Scherma, Ross D. Scherma, Carsten A. Scherma and Iris C. Scherma all of Seekonk; a great granddaughter: Mariana G. Sennott of Sandwich; several nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. He was the brother of the late Guiseppe "Joseph" Scherma, Luigi "Louie" Scherma and Concetta "Connie" Arbia. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. A Committal Service with military honors will be held on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 9:45 AM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, MacArthur Boulevard, Bourne. Inurnment will follow. Following cemetery services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced.
