Marcia Elizabeth Benes

December 18, 1949 — February 24, 2023

The world lost a remarkable woman, and our Earth lost one of its most passionate advocates, when Marcia Elizabeth (Reid) Benes' short but courageous battle with angiosarcoma ended on February 24, 2023.
A graduate of Goddard College with a BS in philosophy, she later returned to school while raising two young children to earn her MS in journalism from Boston University. Marcia had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She met her husband, Miguel Benes, while studying abroad.
Marcia was dedicated to her family, especially her son, Lucian Benes of Plainville; daughter Sati Benes Chock; and granddaughter Emmeline Chock, both of Honolulu, HI.
She was a fierce protector of the environment and the people she loved. In addition to travel, she treasured time caring for her beloved dogs, ponies, sheep, chickens, goats, and other pets, and tending her organic farm. Marcia founded and directed the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards and committed over three decades of her life to public health. She founded and served as Executive Director of the Natural Resources Trust of Plainville, protecting 60 acres of wildlife habitat.
In addition to her husband and children, she will be deeply missed by her siblings Carol Bennatti of Orland, ME, Susan Moor of Malabar, FL and John Reid of Montesano, WA. She was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Hildred Reid.
Her affinity for nature and all of its wonder, and insistence that each of us not only can but has a duty to leave a positive legacy, inspired so many during her 73 years on this planet.
Obituary lovingly prepared by her family.
