Kathleen Smith-Bernat

Kathleen J. (White) Smith-Bernat, 76, of Attleboro, MA, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at the Cedarwood Gardens in Franklin, MA where she had been a resident for several months.  She was the wife of the late Robert John Bernat who died on May 25, 2022, and the late John E. Smith who died in 1995.  Her first husband and father of her children, Richard P. Elgar, passed in 2017.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 26, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Richard E. White and the late Rosalie June (Smith) White.  Prior to moving to Franklin, MA she was a longtime resident of the City of Attleboro, MA.
Ms. Smith-Bernat was employed by the City of Attleboro and worked in the Office of the Mayor and in various municipal capacities under the administrations of Raymond Macomber, Gerald Keane, Brenda Reed, Kai Shang, and Judith Robbins before her retirement in 1998.
She loved music with a special affection for the sounds of Elvis.  Kathleen was an ice cream fanatic and treasured the times cooking, gardening and loved nature and the outdoors.  However, her truest pride and love was that for her much loved and cherished grandchildren whom she admired and adored.
Kathleen was a strong believer in reincarnation.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Rocco D. Elgar of Smithfield, Rhode Island; Raphael R. Elgar of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Christopher M. Elgar of Castle Haynes, North Carolina; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; her siblings: Rebecca L. Morris of Texarkana, Texas, and Douglas E. Hilliard of Dover, Tennessee and many aunts, uncles, extended family members and nieces and nephews in Indiana, Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Alaska.
She was the sister of the late Phillip R. Cherry and the late Donald L. Myers.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a Memorial Visitation on Thursday, June 16, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the "Commonwealth Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA.
The funeral cortege will leave the funeral home following visitation and arrive at Newell Burying Ground, South Attleboro, MA for a 1:00 p.m. graveside service followed by burial.
