Josephine "Jo" F. Varone

Josephine "Jo" Florence (Chiuppi) Varone,102, entered into her eternal home on November 30, 2022. After a long, well lived life, she spent her final weeks at the Dr. Ruth McLain Hospice Home in Braintree, MA. Jo recently moved to the hospice home from Christopher Heights in Attleboro, MA where she lived for 19 years. She was a devoted mom, wife, grandma, great grandma and friend to many. She was the widow of Anthony "Tony" P. Varone to whom she was married for 67 years. Born in Middleboro, MA on March 16, 1920, she was the loving daughter of Maria (Tosti) and Samuel Chiuppi. Jo grew up in Middleboro surrounded by one sister and five brothers and attended Middleboro schools. Jo and Tony made their home in Pawtucket, RI and then South Attleboro, MA, where they raised their four children. She is survived by her son, Anthony, and his wife, Linda (Wallace) of Nokomis, FL, daughter, Carol, and her husband, Lee Forget, of North Attleboro, daughter, Nancy, and her husband, Jim Shearer, of Londonderry, NH, and son, Louis, and his wife, Kathy (Flynn), of Aurora, CO. Jo and Tony had 8 grandchildren and was predeceased by her grandson, Anthony J. Varone,16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Grandma Jo was a very present and special person in all of their lives.  After being a homemaker for many years and very active in her children's lives, both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Jo joined the workforce as an Attleboro School Department cafeteria worker. She left that job after acting as Head Cook at Attleboro High School for a number of years. Jo and Tony moved from So. Attleboro to Plainville in 1970. Jo worked as a salesperson at the Sport Shop in Attleboro then at Miss and Mrs., a popular dress shop on Kelly Boulevard in North Attleboro, MA which were jobs she loved. Being around, and purchasing!, nice clothes was important to her.Jo was active with the Live Yers at the Hockomock Y and an avid and accomplished golfer. She and Tony belonged to Heather Hill Country Club in Plainville, MA and then the Norton Country Club where she was the Senior Women's Club Champion for 2 years. Jo also held the distinction of making 2 holes-in-one at Norton Country Club! She continued playing golf at the former Wading River Golf Course in Norton, MA until she was well into her 100th year.In addition, Jo was a wonderful artist. She took lessons from many local art teachers, including Ben Macomber, at the Larson Senior Center. Her paintings are hanging in many homes in the area. Because of her love of music, Jo took part in many musicals put on by the senior center. Reading was a favorite pastime as was completing the daily crossword puzzle in the Sun Chronicle-in pen!In 2004, Jo and Tony moved to Christopher Heights where she took part in many activities-craft making, cooking club, Wii bowling, Bingo and Scattergories. For years she made many floral arrangements with the flowers donated to Christopher Heights. In the early years at the assisted living, her favorite hour was Pub Time! She and her friends would chat and laugh and just enjoy each other as they had a glass of wine!Family and friends are cordially invited to attend Visitation in Celebration of Her Life on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA. Relatives and friends are invited to Celebrate Jo's Life at a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 132 North Main Street, Attleboro, MA.Following church services, an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced.Burial will be private at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
