Joseph E. Smith, Sr.

Joseph "Joe" Edward Smith, Sr., of North Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Margaret "Marge" Elizabeth (Close) Smith, to whom he was married to for 54 years.A graduate of East Haven High School, Class of 1957, he received his Bachelor's Degree from Rutgers University. Joe proudly and honorably served our country in the United States Air Force, and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. Joe worked briefly in the private sector before joining the Federal Bureau of Investigations and enjoyed a career of 28 years. Thirteen years were as a Supervisor in the Providence Rhode Island office. Post retirement, Joe worked for the Justice Commission of Rhode Island, appointed by Governor Lincoln Almond.A resident of North Attleboro for the past seventeen years where he was a member of St. Mary's Church, he previously lived in East Greenwich, RI.A man of great faith and devotion, the overwhelming love of his life was his family. Joe was passionate about sports and was an avid and ardent fan of all of the Boston sports teams. He was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI.In addition to his wife, Marge, he leaves his loving children: Joseph Edward Smith, Jr. and his wife, Christine E. (Viles) Smith, of Dedham, MA; William J. Smith and his wife, Amy H. (Hermonat) Smith, of Wakefield, RI; Charlene E. Butts and her husband, Christian P. Butts, of Plainville, MA; Laura A. Dunberg and her husband, Scott Dunberg, of Freehold, NJ; Deborah J. Baker and her husband, David S. Baker, of Concord, MA; and Kathleen M. Prettitore and her husband, Russell Prettitore, of Middletown, NJ. Joe was the proud and adoring grandfather of fourteen grandchildren and the brother of Peter C. Smith and his wife, Casey (Leonard) Smith, of Madison, CT. He leaves many nieces and nephews and dear friends.Friends and family are cordially invited to honor and remember Joe by gathering for a Visitation with full Veteran's Honors on Thursday, April 26, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend the Funeral Service on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, North Attleboro, MA.Burial services will immediately follow in Mt.
