Joseph Barreira, Jr., 91, of King Philip Avenue, Bristol, died on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Facility in Providence. He was the husband of Laura M. (Voccio) Barreira to whom he was married on February 2, 1946. Mr. Barreira was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on May 19, 1921 and was the son of the late Joseph Barreira, Sr. and Mary (Rodrigues) Barreira. He was raised and educated in his native community of Fall River. He served in the United States Naval Service - Coast Guard from July 20, 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946. In early years, Mr. Barreira was employed at the family bakery on South Main Street in Fall River. He later was employed by Kaiser Aluminum and retired from the Town of Barrington School Department where he worked as a member of the maintenance department for ten years. He moved to Barrington from Fall River and resided there for 33 years before moving to West Palm Beach, Florida where he was a resident for more than twenty years prior to returning to Bristol earlier this year. Mr. Barreira was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Bristol. He enjoyed boating in earlier years, salt water fishing, playing golf and performing carpentry projects around his home. In addition to his beloved wife of 66 years, Mr. Barreira leaves a sister: Hilda Ferreira of Portsmouth; his sister-in-law: Pat Cruso of Bristol and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was the brother of the late Ernest Barreira and Arsenio "Sam" Barreira. Visitation has been respectfully omitted. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Following cemetery services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced.
