Joseph Herman Howard, Jr.

Joseph Herman Howard, Jr., 69, of Elm Terrace, North Attleboro; formerly of Juniper Road, North Attleboro and Easton; died on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the Kindred Hospital in Stoughton. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline R. (Burke) Howard to whom he was married on November 14, 1965 in Easton, Massachusetts. Born in Steubenville, Ohio on December 6, 1944, he was a son of the late Joseph Herman Howard, Sr. and Mary V. (Irwin) Howard. He was a 1962 graduate of Weirton High School in Weirton, West Virginia and studied at Liberty Bible College. Mr. Howard was a proud veteran having served with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era from his enlistment on February 28, 1963 until his honorable discharge on February 27, 1967. He was employed as a mental health worker for the former Taunton State Hospital, now Taunton Rehabilitation Center, for 26 years prior to his retirement in 2001. A North Attleboro resident for the past 12 years, he formerly resided in Easton. His favorite pastimes included time spent on the computer, creating cherished memories with his family and gaining inspiration from reading the Bible. In addition to his wife of almost 49 years, he leaves a son: Joseph H. Howard, III and his wife, Suzanne J. (Hayes) Howard, of Attleboro; a grandson: Joseph H. Howard IV of Attleboro; a sister-in-law: Valerie J. Burke of Everman, Texas; two brothers-in-law: Phillip C. Burke of Cumberland, Rhode Island and James W. Burke in New Jersey; a nephew: Jason J. Burke of Everman, Texas and several cousins, extended family members and dear friends. He was the father of the late James Henry Howard who died on July 11, 2005. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Thursday, July 10, 2014 from 10:00 - 11:00 AM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the DYER-LAKE FUNERAL HOME, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service with Veteran's Honors immediately following visitation on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the DYER-LAKE FUNERAL HOME, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Carole L. Baker, Pastor of Central Congregational Church, Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be private in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, MacArthur Boulevard, Bourne. Children's room available during visitation and the funeral service. Following the funeral service family and friends will be cordially invited to join the Howard family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at Central Congregational Church.
