John William White

October 17, 1923 — July 9, 2013

John William White, 89, of Canterbury Woods, Garfield Avenue, Attleboro; formerly of Thacher Brook Circle and Union Street, Attleboro; died on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at his residence following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Helen R. (Lynch) White to whom he was married on November 7, 1942. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on October 17. 1923, he was a son of the late Walter N. and Mary M. (Heatherington) White. He was raised and educated in the City of Attleboro where he was a 1942 graduate of Attleboro High School. Mr. White was a veteran of the United States Army having enlisted on April 2, 1943 and served with the 5th tank destroyer group until his honorable discharge on November 18, 1945. He was employed as an Attleboro Firefighter from 1947 until his retirement in 1956 with the rank of Captain. Mr. White was employed at the former Metals and Controls, later acquired by Texas Instruments, for more than a total of 30 years prior to his retirement. At Texas Instruments he was part of the Research Nuclear Development. He was a lifelong resident of the City of Attleboro and was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church where he was a volunteer and served as a Eucharistic Minister. His favorite pastimes included walking and making trails in the woods and playing golf particularly at Wading River where he was a former member. Mr. White was a volunteer at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, was an ardent stamp collector and history aficionado. In addition to his wife, he leaves six children: Karen D. Stevens and her husband, N. Craig Stevens, of Rehoboth; Kathleen A. Santos of Warwick, Rhode Island; Stephen J. White of Westport; John P. White and his wife, Kathleen (Kelley) White, of Attleboro; Lisa M. White of Attleboro and Thomas A. White and his wife, Patricia L. (Barry) White, of Rehoboth; ten grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was the brother of the late Kenneth White and Dorothea White. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Children's room available during visitation. Those in need of a ride to visitation may call the funeral home at (508) 695-0200 to make an advance reservation for such gratis transportation. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main Street - Route 152, Attleboro. There will be no funeral cortege from the funeral home prior to the commencement of the funeral Mass. Following the funeral Mass an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the St. John the Evangelist Church Hospitality Center located adjacent to the church. Chapel services with Military Honors followed by burial will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 2:15 PM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. The funeral cortege to the Massachusetts National Cemetery will leave St. John the Evangelist Church parking lot at 1:00 PM. The family asks that flowers be omitted due to restrictions of flowers at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. White's name may be made to the Dyer-Lake Charitable Foundation, Inc., a registered 501 (c) 3 organization, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, North Attleboro, MA 02760 to benefit the Covenant House, the Nature Conservancy or charity of selection.
