John Austin O'Callaghan, 95, of Attleboro, formerly of Harwich Port, MA, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, MA. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly sixty-three years, Joan C. (Paterson) O'Callaghan, and was the cherished companion and best friend of Margaret Hassey of Attleboro, MA, for the last six years.Born in Boston, MA, on November 18, 1921, he was the son of the late Patrick Jackson O'Callaghan and the late Martha (Glynn) O'Callaghan. A graduate of Olney High School, (Philadelphia, PA), he proudly and honorably served our country during World War II as an air traffic controller in Ridgewell, England with the 381st Bombardment Squadron of the United States Air Force. After his military service, he returned home with his new bride, Joan, and graduated from Northeastern University with an Associate degree in Arts, from Boston College School of Law, and later from Harvard Business School. John spent the majority of his career as a tax attorney for Boston Gas Company, ultimately becoming a Vice-President in the tax department. Living on the Cape after his retirement, John was an avid gardener who maintained both beautiful rose and vegetable gardens, and delighted in watching birds at his birdfeeders. He loved bowling and socializing with friends; enjoyed the beach; and went almost daily for long walks with his wife and his dog until relocating to Attleboro after his wife's passing. John loved doing Sudoku and crossword puzzles and watching the Boston Red Sox. He treasured time exercising with his cardiac rehab group at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, and enjoyed hosting parties at his home entertaining friends. John was a loving father to his children: the late Paul O'Callaghan; Jeffrey Bernard O'Callaghan and his wife, Mildred (Barr) O'Callaghan, of Hanson and Harwich Port, MA; and Shelagh O'Callaghan of Attleboro, MA. He leaves his adoring grandchildren: Rebecca Branconier and her husband, Glen; Megan Trufant and her husband, Michael; Jennifer Packard and her husband, DJ; Michael Chwalek, Jr., and his wife, Bridie; and Jonathan O'Callaghan; and his treasured great-grandchildren: Alexys, Adelina, Haleigh, Sophia, Andrew, Julian, and Emmanuel. John is survived by his sister-in-law, Shelagh Gick, of Ottawa, Canada, and leaves many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He will be missed terribly by his cats: Hazel and Henry.
