John Edward Gaumond, Sr., 97, of Elmwood Street, North Attleboro, peacefully passed away at Home and Hospice of Rhode Island in Providence on Friday, July 10, 2015. He was the loving husband of the late Clara C. (St. Jean) Gaumond who died on September 12, 1992. Born in Oxford, MA on August 3, 1917, he was the son of the late John Gaumond and Eve (Wentworth) Gaumond. John was the proud founder, owner and operator of Gaumond's Auto Body in North Attleboro, and made North Attleboro his home for most of his life. He honorably served our country in the United States Army from 1943 until 1946, including tours of duty in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. John humbly received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with three service stars, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Purple Heart. He delighted in watching Western movies, ski mobiling, and motorcycles, and was an avid camper. As a member of the Good Sam RV/Camping Club and the Holiday Rambler Camping Club, he loved traveling the country and Canada in his motor home with his wife, Claire. He also drove to Las Vegas with his companion, Mel, at the age of almost 90 years old. Most of all, though, John enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. He leaves his beloved son: John E. Gaumond, Jr. and his wife, Carol Ann (Lanteigne) Gaumond of North Attleboro; three grandchildren: John J. Gaumond; Stephen D. Gaumond and his wife, Amy Gaumond; and Barry E. Gaumond and his wife, Bethany Gaumond; six great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; his companion and caregiver, Emelda Ricard, of North Attleboro; and many nieces and nephews. John was the brother of the late Harry Gaumond, Melvina Kuntz, Irene St. Jean, Pat Gaumond, and Eva Lee, and his step-sister, Marie. Private visitation and funeral services, both with Veteran's Honors, will be held in the "Memorial Chapel" of Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.
