John Edward Bates, 92, of Brockton, MA passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at the Seasons Hospice Inpatient Center in Milton, MA. He was the beloved husband of Ruth Ellen (Wood) Bates.
Born in Washington, D.C. on February 5, 1929, he resided in Brockton most of his life.
He started his career as a correctional officer at the age of 22. Serving thirty-five years in civil service, he worked his way to being named the Superintendent of MCI Framingham and the Director of Staff Development and Department of Training, MCI Framingham.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters: Lynne Ellen Bates of Brockton, MA and Leslie Bates of West Hartford, CT and two granddaughters: Brodie Bates Swinton of Deep River, CT and Piper Bates Swinton of Bristol, CT. He was the brother of the late Donald Bates and the late David Bates.
John attended Springfield and Bridgewater Colleges and was a veteran, serving in the Army during final years of World War II.
He met his wife, Ruth, at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, as teenagers, and continued to serve the church in a variety of roles for many years. He and Ruth enjoyed traveling, extensively, throughout their 70 years of marriage.
His life's motto was, "Learn to deal with infirmities yet still enjoy this amazing experience called life".
Visitation has respectfully been omitted.
A Private Graveside service will be held in the Village Cemetery, North Easton, MA.
As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Bates' name may be made to a food pantry of one's choice.
