John Edward Balut

November 11, 1939 — September 12, 2015

John Edward Balut, 75, of North Attleboro, MA, peacefully passed away at his home on Saturday, September 12, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Carol Alice (Dembowski) Balut, to whom he was married on September 26, 1964. Born on November 11, 1939 in Pawtucket, RI, he was a son of the late Francis A. Balut and Mary S. (Sulyma) Balut. A resident of North Attleboro since 1942, John was educated in the North Attleboro public schools, graduating from North Attleboro High School with the class of 1958. He then continued his education, majoring in Mechanical Technology Design Option, and graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston with an Associate Degree in 1960. John proudly served our country as a member of the U.S. Army's 21st Infantry Division stationed in Munich, Germany, as a member of the Le Clerc Rifle Team. He was Honorably Discharged from the service in 1963. John was employed by the Acme Cleveland Corporation in Mansfield, MA for more than 31 years, where he held the position of Manager of Wage Standards and Factory Payroll. He enjoyed his participation in the company's golf league and was thrilled to have gotten his first ever hole-in-one while playing in that league. He retired in 1991, but, never one to be idle, John then enjoyed part-time work driving School Bus #5 in North Attleboro for several years for W.T. Holmes Transportation of Norfolk. He attended St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church in Attleboro Falls, where he was active as an Usher for many years. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Thomas P. McDonough Council #330, in North Attleboro. John also enjoyed using his skills working with Habitat for Humanity in Attleboro. He was an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, and enjoyed golf, travel, taking walks and day trips, cars, and attending car shows. He most especially enjoyed time spent with his wife and family. In addition to his loving wife, Carol, John leaves his treasured children: a son, John N. Balut and his wife, Kimberly D. (Mooney) Balut, of Old Hickory, TN; and a daughter, Christine M. (Balut) Van Newkirk, and her husband, Stephen B. Van Newkirk, of Mansfield, MA; four cherished grandchildren: Gage and Ross Killion, and Anna and Ella Balut. He also leaves his brother, Francis A, Balut of South Attleboro, MA, and three nephews: David Balut and Brian Balut of FL, and Michael Balut of MI. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a Visitation with Veterans Honors on Thursday, September 17, 2015 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Funeral on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. from the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church, Stanley Street, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Thomas Frechette, pastor, officiating. Burial will full Military Honors will immediately follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Towne Street, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John's name may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Mark's Church, 105 Stanley Street, Attleboro Falls, MA 02763.
