Joao Pacheco Monte Raposo

Joo Pacheco Monte Raposo, 89, of North Attleboro, died at home in peace, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, June 30, 2011. He was the husband of Lidia (Lopes) Raposo. Born on April 23, 1922 in the Village of Maia, So Miguel, Azores, he was the son of the late Joo Monte and Augusta (Pacheco) Raposo. He was a loving and devoted father who took great pride in his family. As a young man, Joo immigrated to Canada and worked several jobs in order to bring his entire family to Canada. He later was referred to and employed by the L. G. Balfour Company in Attleboro where he was a distinguished and award winning die maker and ring carver until his retirement. Joo was a true artesian, craftsman and sportsman. His talent in the arts included reverse mold making, wood carving, pewter casting and chain saw sculptures. Some of his early creations are still on display in a museum in his native Portugal that include hand carved chess pieces and a chess board that were recognized by a past President of Portugal. He will be honored on his home Island this July in a ceremony to recognize past citizens who excelled in leadership and craftsmanship. He was a past member of the Independent Sportsmans Club in Foxboro where he won several sporting clay competitions and taught his grandsons how to target shoot. In addition to his loving wife, Lidia (Lopes) Raposo, with whom he had been married for over sixty years, he leaves his children: Guida (Raposo) Chaput and her husband Thomas of Cumberland, RI; Fernandina (Raposo) Medeiros and her husband Mark of North Attleboro and John Antonio Raposo and his wife Donna of Sutton, MA. He was also the grandfather to Mark Medeiros Jr., Christopher Chaput, Kaila (Medeiros) Barcelo, Steven Cove, and Gabrielle Raposo. He was also a Great Grandfather to Rory Barcelo and Jayden Cove. He was the brother of the late Fernandina (Monte - Raposo) Camara and the late Fernando Monte Raposo. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 from 5:00 8:00 PM in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, take a right at the top of the exit, of a mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. For those needing a local ride to visitation simply call (508) 695-0200 to make an advance reservation for such gratis transportation. Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 8:45 AM from the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, take a right at the top of the exit, of a mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, 115 Stanley Street, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Thomas A. Frechette, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery, North Attleboro. Following church services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Raposos name may be made to the Dyer-Lake Charitable Foundation, a registered 501 (c) 3 organization, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, North Attleboro, MA 02760 to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons research.
