The passing of Jennie Lowe Fong on May 31, 2023 after a short illness is announced by her children Judith (Seattle, Wa.), Alison (Rehoboth, Ma.), Barbara (Kihei, Hawaii), Michael (Glendale, Az.), Jeffrey (N. Attleboro, Ma.), and their spouses. On October 11, 1927 she was born to Mak Shee and Frank Lowe in New Bedford, Ma. Like many of her generation, growing up as a child of The Depression affected how she viewed her world. As a consequence she developed a strong work ethic, was devoted to her children; and was regarded by some as the backbone of the family.
In 1947 when she and Arthur Fong married, they settled in North Attleboro where she lived most of her life. For decades she and her husband owned and operated Art's 3 Hour Cleaners on Elm Street in North Attleboro; supported by a loyal following who recognized their dedication to quality and service. It was through her work there that she became known in the local community. After her husband passed away in 2014, she relocated to Cumberland, RI.
Although she was a shy person, the mere mention of these things brought a smile to her face; and occasionally an, "Oh stop it.'' In no particular order: eating out, square dancing, 'hillbilly' music, French fries with butter (!), pastries and chicken from Wrights, parades, propagating house plants, right-hand- turns, watching foreign language movies, and the color purple. Always well-turned out, she cared about her appearance; and thanks to Mark, she was always well-coifed. Neither rain, snow, or sleet could keep her from her weekly hairdresser's appointment!
It's well-known that having a good support system is associated with a happier and long life. In her case it was so. After she retired, she particularly liked the company of her children and their friends; or her nieces for dining out in the area; and she beamed with pride when her grandchildren graduated from high school or college.
During her 95 years on this earth, our mother Jennie Fong touched so many lives. For those who were lucky enough to exist in her orbit, they feel tangible loss. Now that she has moved on, we surely believe that she is watching over us from her new location in the Heavens. RIP. We all shall meet again.
A gathering of her family and extended family is planned for the future.
