Jeannette Louise (Wood) Bigelow, 92, of Middleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2019 at the Hannah B.G. Shaw Home for the Aged in Middleboro, MA.
Born on December 14, 1926 in Taunton, MA, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Harry Collin Wood and the late Florence (Perra) Wood.
A graduate of Middleborough Memorial High School, Class of 1944, she received her nursing license as a Licensed Practical Nurse of the first class, from Morton Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a Nurse at Lakeville Sanatorium, Bridgewater State Prison, and Martha's Vineyard Hospital, where she was known as the "helicopter nurse."
Prior to living in Middleboro, Jeannette resided in Oak Bluffs, MA, and was an entrepreneur owning the business Bigelow's of Martha's Vineyard. Jeannette was the first known professional female wall paper hanger on this side of New England. She also purchased and renovated historic houses with her business partner, Emile Niro, in Middleboro and on Martha's Vineyard, and performed most of the carpentry and renovation work herself.
She enjoyed reading, writing, word games, and was always intrigued by genealogy, traveling extensively to follow her ancestors' past. A gourmet cook, she catered many events and functions over the years while living on Martha's Vineyard.
Jeannette was the loving mother of Judy Bigelow-Costa, R.Bradford Bigelow and Garth Bigelow. She was the grandmother of five grandchildren (two of whom predeceased her) and seven great-grandchildren. Jeannette was the sister of the late Jeanne Tilton, Yvonne Mendes, and Laurier Wood, and leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends. She also leaves her Aunt, Madeline Porier, 102 years old, who resides at the Hannah B.G. Shaw Home.
Her family wishes to thank everyone at the nursing home, Compassionate Care and Church of Our Savior for the warmth, generosity and care that was given to their mother.
All services will be privately held, with a burial on Martha's Vineyard at a later date to be announced.
