Jean Ida (Monson) Smith, 84, of Orleans, MA, peacefully passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA. She was the wife of the late Sherrill B. Smith and the late John H. Jensen. Born on May 16, 1931 in Winchester, MA, she was the daughter of Clarence E. Monson and Jenny A. (Norlin) Monson. Jean was a graduate of Winchester High School, Class of 1949, and Wheelock College, where she was awarded a Bachelor's degree. A longtime resident of Orleans, Jean previously resided in Santa Barbara, CA. She delighted in her work as a Kindergarten Teacher for many years at Wellfleet Elementary School before retiring. Jean attended The Church of St. Mary of the Harbor in Provincetown, MA, and was a member of the National Teachers Association and the Society of Cape Cod Craftsman. She loved working with the fiber arts, spinning, weaving, and knitting, as well as baking and gardening. Jean was also a volunteer at the Lower Cape Outreach Council, helping those in need of assistance in the community. She was particularly adept at supporting the dreams of others, most especially those of her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her two beloved children: Elizabeth Marie Woodford of Stafford, VA, and Peter John Jensen of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; four cherished grandchildren: Matthew Woodford, Rebecca Woodford, Amalia Jensen and Kathryn Jensen; eleven nieces and nephews, her extended family, including Jennifer Smith, Laura Usher, Tom Smith and Katherine Bunsick; and many dear friends. She was the sister of the late Roy A. Monson of Winchester, MA. Visitation has respectfully been omitted. Friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend a Memorial Service for Jean on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 204 Monument Rd, Orleans, MA 02653, Father Adam Linton and Father Terry Pannel, officiating.
