Obituary

Jane L. (Mendler) Merkle of Attleboro, MA passed away on January 12, 2026, at the St. Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich, RI. She was the beloved wife and best friend of the late David Edward Merkle to whom she was married on June 14, 1950, and who died on August 11, 2011.

Jane was born in Attleboro, MA on December 3, 1933, and resided in the Village of Attleboro Falls. She and her husband resided in Plainville for two years prior to moving to the City of Attleboro where she resided the remainder of her life.

In her early years, Jane was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in North Attleboro where she was in the youth group and sang in the youth choir. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Attleboro, where she was a youth group leader for many years at All Saints Church and a member of the vestry. She was also a cub scout leader for a few years and always enjoyed time spent with young people.

Jane had been employed at L. G. Balfour Company for many years and later at Cherry and Webb in the corporate office in South Attleboro, MA until her retirement.

Jane and Dave spent over 40 summers in Maine both in Boothbay and Camden and loved going out on windjammer cruises. Campfires with friends and family in Maine who came to visit, especially her children and grandchildren, gave her so much joy. They also went on cruises with friends and her son, Keith and his wife, Cathy. Jane and Dave also enjoyed spending time watching the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox where she always tried to tell them how to play through the tv.

Jane loved traveling, working in her gardens, and going out to lunch with friends. After her husband died, she continued traveling with her friends. She also loved the vacations with her granddaughter, Dawn, to Las Vegas, New York and Boston. Time spent with her two great granddaughters was very special to her and she would spend hours playing with them and taking pictures of them. They gave her so much joy and she loved going to see them compete in their sports events and school activities.

She leaves three sons: Philip H. Merkle and his wife, Cynthia Merkle, of La Quinta, CA; Wayne H. Merkle of Attleboro, MA; and Keith D. Merkle and his wife, Cathy Merkle, of Attleboro, MA; three granddaughters: Dawn B. (Merkle) Slack and her husband, George Slack, of Providence, RI; Hana (Merkle) Moore and her husband Brendan Moore of San Francisco, CA; and Sarah C. Merkle of Los Angeles, CA; and three great grandchildren: Sydney T. Slack and Sierra T. Slack both of Providence, RI; and Julian Moore of San Francisco, CA.

She was the sister of the late Ron Mendler who died on March 18, 2011.
