James Macaulay, 97, of Cumberland, RI, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Lowe) Macaulay, to whom he was married for more than seventy-two years.Born on June 24, 1920 in Nottingham, England, he was the son of the late Francis A. Macaulay and the late Dorothy M. (Widdowson) Macaulay. During WWII, James served as a mechanic in the Royal Air Force where he honed his technical skills. In 1957, he and the family moved to the United States, first to New Jersey and then to Rhode Island where he was instrumental in operating the knitting plant at Providence Braid Company until his retirement. James was a long term resident of Cumberland where whenever possible he indulged his two main passions, either crafting things out of wood in the basement or chopping it down around his the garden. In addition to his wife, Joan, he is survived by his loving children: David Alexander Macaulay and his wife, Ruthie (Murray) Macaulay, of VT; Patricia Lynne Coppola and her husband, Richard Coppola, of PA; and Stephen James Macaulay and his wife, Christine (Scorpio) of Woonsocket, RI. He was the grandfather of eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
