James Anthony Lally, Jr.

James Anthony Lally, Jr., 87, of Carrier Avenue, South Attleboro, died on St. Patrick's Day - Sunday, March 17, 2013 at the Golden Living Center - Garden Place in Attleboro where he had been a resident for the past 15 months. He was the beloved husband of Mary Theresa (O'Leary) Lally to whom he was married on February 24, 1957. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 1, 1925, he was a son of the late James Anthony Lally, Sr. and Mary Agnes (Gray) Lally. He was raised in Chelsea and Brighton and was a 1943 graduate of the former Commerce High School in Boston and later attended the former Salem State College. Mr. Lally was a proud veteran of the United States Navy having served from his enlistment on July 27, 1943 until his honorable discharge on May 17, 1946. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with one star. In earlier years before his marriage and following his military service, Mr. Lally served for 8 years with the Jesuits as a religious brother. He was employed as an accountant for the former Typographic House in Boston for more than 25 years prior to his retirement. A resident of Attleboro for the past four years, Mr. Lally was previously a resident of Brockton for 42 years. Since residing in South Attleboro, Mr. Lally was a communicant of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Roman Catholic Church. His favorite pastimes included listening to classical music, gardening and reading. In addition to his wife, he leaves seven children: Anne P. St. Pierre of Berkley; Loretta E. Lazarus of Marietta, Georgia; James S. Lally of Brockton; Mary T. Nedder with whom he resided in Attleboro; Michael G. Lally of Warren, Maine; Brian P. Lally of Attleboro and David F. Lally of Attleboro; 15 grandchildren; one great grandson and several extended family members. He was the brother of the late Catherine Twoomey, Margaret Lally, Loretta "Etta" Lally, Mary Ostler and Joseph Lally. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on the left) Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to join the funeral cortege with Veteran's Honors on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 8:30 AM from the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on the left) Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Baltic Street, South Attleboro with the Rev. Jon-Paul Gallant, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Newell Burying Ground, South Attleboro. Following cemetery services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Lally's name may be made to the Dyer-Lake Charitable Foundation, Inc., a registered 501 (c) 3 organization, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, North Attleboro, MA 02760 to benefit the Alzheimer's Association.
