James Leroy Alfred, Jr., 84, of Hillside Road, North Attleboro, a retired business founder, owner and operator, died on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the Life Care Center of Attleboro surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was the husband of the late Dorothy "Bunny" (Currier) Alfred who died on August 17, 1992 and is the longtime companion of Jean M. (Galante) Scargle with whom he resided. Born in Brockton, Massachusetts on November 12, 1928, he was a son of the late James L. Alfred, Sr. and Vera C. (Heap) Alfred. He was raised and educated in the City of Brockton and was a 1949 graduate of Brockton High School. Mr. Alfred was the founder, owner and operator of Pleasant Optical in Attleboro serving the community for more than 58 years prior to his retirement and his son, Fred L. Alfred, taking over the family business. He started his optical career in his native community of Brockton working his apprenticeship under the auspices of the late Dr. William Work. He moved from Brockton to North Attleboro in 1978. In years past, Mr. Alfred was a race car driving enthusiast and was a lifelong animal lover. Mr. Alfred served as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America - Troop 17, Brockton and had a lifelong admiration for the organization. Spending time with his family creating lifelong memories for all to remember was his most cherished pastime. In his later years, he was well known throughout the community for wearing his Western cowboy attire as he was never without his cowboy hat, jacket and boots. In addition to his longtime companion, Mr. Alfred leaves three sons: James L. Alfred, III, Chief of Police for the Town of Plainville and his wife, Jennifer L. (Collupy) Alfred, of Attleboro; Fred L. Alfred, President and Owner of Pleasant Optical, and his wife, Pamela (Heidcamp) Alfred, of Attleboro and Glen D. Alfred and his wife, Cynthia L. (Blanchette) Alfred, of Attleboro; six grandchildren: Jason, Justin, Courtney, Samantha, James and Meredith Alfred all of Attleboro; one great grandchild: Avery Alfred of Attleboro; a sister: Norma Duhamel of Brockton and several extended family members and dear friends. At his request, public visitation is respectfully omitted. Funeral services will be private followed by a private graveside service and burial at Mount Hope Cemetery and Arboretum, Mount Hope Street, North Attleboro with the Rev. Kelly K. Thibeault, Pastor of the First Congregational Church, Old Post Road, North Attleboro, officiating.
