Hilda Elizabeth Porter (nee: Somerville) passed away peacefully on
Sunday, September 29th, 2024 at the age of 91. Born and raised in
Scotland, Hilda trained as a surgical nurse, and emigrated to the US
in the mid 1950’s when the US was looking for skilled nurses with
managerial skills. She worked in New York City for years before
following a professional opportunity upstate, and marrying David
Porter in March of 1970. She then worked in schools, hospitals, and
as a visiting home nurse in the greater Albany, NY area while becoming
a mother to Kenneth in 1972. In the early 1990’s she retired with
David to Edgecomb, ME where, among other things, she enjoyed making
jams and marmalades to sell in local stores, and working at a Tea shop
in Boothbay. After David passed she moved to Oriental, NC, where she
very much enjoyed the climate, the friends and neighbors, and playing
her harp for small audiences. She finally moved to Sharon, MA to be
closer to her son and his family. She joins her late husband, David
Porter, and her late stepsons, Mark Porter and David Lee Michaels, as
well as her siblings Anne, Alan, Nigel, and Catriona.
She is survived by her much loved son, Ken Porter and his wife, Diane
Krentzman Porter of Foxborough, MA, her Daughter-in-Law Shari Porter,
her step-grandchildren Jessica (Porter) Machado and her husband, Chris
Machado of Carver, MA; Jason Porter and his wife, Rachel Porter of
Queensbury, NY; Samuel Krentzman of West Roxbury, MA; Jennifer
Krentzman of Foxborough, MA; and Joshua Krentzman of Arlington, VA, as
well as many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews in the United
Kingdom and Denmark. Hilda had two step-great grandchildren, Rosalie
and Zachary Machado.
Hilda was a woman of faith and enjoyed her churches most recently at
First Congregational Church of Sharon and later at The First
Congregational Church of Mansfield. She was well-known for her
charitable service, her love to sing and recite poetry, her writings
in her Memoir’s Group, her paintings and her proper Scottish teas.
She learned the harp after retiring and always enjoyed making her
marmalade. To Hilda, her most important job was as a mother. Her
devotion and dedication to Ken provided much joy and reciprocated
love. She will be profoundly missed.
A memorial service for Hilda will be at Sharon Congregational Church,
29 N. Main Street, Sharon, MA on November 9th at 11AM. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be sent to the groups listed below.
