Herbert Alden Prew, Sr.

Herbert Alden Prew, Sr., 85, of William Tanner Avenue, North Attleboro, died on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Stella E. (Phillips) Prew who died on August 16, 1975. Born in North Attleboro, Massachusetts on October 27, 1926, he was a son of the late Albert and Jesse (Atwood) Prew. He was a lifelong resident of his native community. He opted not to continue his high school education and instead decided to join the United States Army. He was inducted into the service on February 13, 1945 and served honorably until his discharge on November 22, 1946. He achieved the rank of Private First Class having served with the 731st Engineer Depot Company. Mr. Prew was the recipient of the Army Occupation Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. One of his proudest moments was being recognized as a man of the "Greatest Generation" and receiving his high school diploma from North Attleboro High School on June 4, 2000. Mr. Prew was employed for 42 years prior to his retirement as a construction superintendent for Westcott Construction in North Attleboro. In earlier years he attended Central Congregational Church in Attleboro Falls with his family. He was a member of the Rabboni Royal Lodge Chapter, the Attleboro Council, the Shriner's, the Angle Stone Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a 58-year member of the Bristol Lodge A.F. & A.M. He leaves two children: Herbert A. Prew, Jr., owner and operator of Prew Landscaping of Mansfield, and his wife, Linda M. (Wentzell) Prew, of Mansfield; and Pamela A. (Prew) St. John, a retired North Attleboro Police Officer and her husband, Robert J. St. John, Sr., of North Attleboro; two grandchildren: Mark A. Prew and Michael A. Prew both of Mansfield; two grand doggies: Maggie and Molly, his cherished chocolate labs, and several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was the brother of the late Paul Prew, William Prew, Robert Prew, Margie Wilson and Janet Pardey. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Friday, August 24, 2012 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. A ritual service conducted by the Bristol Lodge A.F. & A.M. will take place at 7:30 PM during visitation. For those in need of a local ride to visitation simply call the funeral home directly at (508) 695-0200 to make an advance reservation for such gratis transportation. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend the funeral service with Veteran's Honors on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the "Memorial Chapel" of Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Burial with military honors will follow at Shepardville Cemetery, Taunton Street - Route 152, Plainville. Following cemetery services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the Bristol Lodge A.F. & A.M., 46 South Washington Street, North Attleboro. Children's room available during visitation and the funeral service. Please omit flowers.
