Helga M. O'Neill

Helga M. (Oxfort) O'Neill, 90, of Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at Life Care Center of Attleboro from complications due to the COVID-19 virus. She was the beloved wife of the late John H. O'Neill who died in 2001.
Born on October 25, 1929 in Pferdsdorf, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Hermann and Martha Oxfort.
Raised and educated in East Germany, she was one of five children. Helga received her degree in Technical Design and was encouraged upon graduation to travel the world. Her father supplied the ticket and she then found work wherever she stopped in her journeys. Helga had many jobs throughout her life but was most proud of being a machinist. She later worked as a seamstress, as well.
She proudly became a United States citizen in 1963. Even though she spoke with a heavy German accent, when asked where she was from, she would always respond "America", which caused people to stop in their tracks. Although she often spoke of her German heritage, she loved being a citizen of the United States. Helga spoke three languages: German, Japanese, and English.
Helga previously lived in Oval, in Bastress Township, PA, retired to Gutherville, AL in 1991 where she was an active member of the First Methodist Church, then moved to Birmingham, AL in 2001. She came to Attleboro in 2015 to be closer to her family.
Helga was the loving mother of Brendan S. ONeill and his wife, Kris (Root) O'Neill, of Attleboro. She was the proud and adoring grandmother of Matthew Shuman and his spouse, Matthew Ambler; Travis O'Neill; and Mitchell O'Neill. She was predeceased by her siblings: Veronica, Gerda, Karli and Ottomar, and leaves her nieces and nephews in Europe: Ottomar, Berod, Monika, Regina, and Kerstin, as well as her sister-in-law, Hannelore Oxfort.
