Helen Regina Laurila

Helen Regina (Brown) Laurila, R.N., 81, of Valerie Drive, Attleboro, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at her residence. She was the wife of the late John Emil Laurila, Jr. to whom she was married on August 7, 1956 and died on October 6, 2009. Together they shared over 50 years of happy marriage. They particularly enjoyed the times they were able to travel together to Maine for vacation. Born in Leominster, Massachusetts on February 5, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Nellie (Wheelock) Brown. She was raised and educated in Leominster where she graduated from Leominster High School and later attended and graduated from the Fitchburg Hospital School of Nursing. As a registered nurse she was employed at the former Pleasant Manor Nursing Home, the former Ridgewood Court Nursing Home and Sturdy Memorial Hospital. She also spent time volunteering for Attleboro schools. A resident of Attleboro since 1959, she previously resided in Fitchburg and Leominster. Since her retirement ten years ago, she enjoyed spending time reading, but mostly treasured the times spent with her grandchildren creating lifelong memories to cherish. She leaves five children: Thomas J. Laurila of Attleboro; Peter A. Laurila of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; James R. Laurila of Florence; David M. Laurila of Attleboro and Amy Jo Arndt of Poughkeepsie, New York and six grandchildren: Brianna, Joshua, Mary, Sarah, Rebecca, and Eric. She was the grandmother of the late Ian Laurila. Visitation has been respectfully omitted. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Celebration of Her Life Service on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Candleberry Chapel, 381 South Main Street, Attleboro with the Rev. Kenneth Boyle, Pastor, officiating. Private burial services will be held in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. Laurila's name may be made to the Dyer-Lake Charitable Foundation, Inc., a registered 501 (c) (3) organization, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, North Attleboro, MA 02760 to benefit the American Cancer Society or to the Attleboro Public Library Trust Gift Fund C/O Attleboro Public Library, 74 North Main Street, Attleboro, MA 02703 Attention: Director.
