Harriet Close Ferguson

Harriet Close Ferguson, 84, of Mansfield Avenue, Norton, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, July 30, 2011. She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas C. Ferguson to whom she was married for 55 years at the time of his death on June 12, 2011. Mrs. Ferguson was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on December 15, 1926, the twin daughter of the late Hubert W. and Marie (Durtschi) Close. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1945. She met her husband in Pittsfield and they married on May 5, 1956. They had two daughters and lived in Pittsfield until 1965 when they moved to Ardmore, Pennsylvania. After living in Ardmore for 40 years, Harriet and her husband relocated to Norton five years ago. She was employed by the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC; General Electric in Pittsfield; Haverford College in Haverford, PA; and lastly, she worked as an administrative assistant at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Radnor, PA where she retired from in 1995 after 20 years of service. Mrs. Ferguson enjoyed hiking, skiing, camping, gardening, sewing, painting and traveling. She pursued her gardening interests by tending her own garden, as well as, volunteering at the Haverford College greenhouse and Tyler Arboretum. She also found time to volunteer at the Ardmore Public Library and the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Hubert Close; and sisters, Elizabeth Fyfe, Hilda Northcliffe, Dorothy Gifford, Helen Edwards, Martina Fuchs and Ruth Close. Survivors include her two daughters: Anne Lima and her husband, Steven Lima, of West Terre Haute, Indiana and Jane Cabral and her husband, Steven Cabral, of North Attleboro; four grandchildren, John Lima, Elise Lima, Christopher Cabral and Ethan Cabral. She was the loving aunt to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Visitation has been respectfully omitted. Funeral services and burial will be private.
